The recently launched cookbook Food of the Southern Forests by WA Chef and Author Sophie Zalokar has been nominated overnight for the culinary worlds Oscar equivalent – the Gourmand Awards – in not one, but two categories after been awarded Australian category winner for ‘Best Woman Chef Cookbook’ and also ‘Best Local Cuisine Book’.
The book now goes on to compete in the next round of judging against other cookbooks from around the world in its nominated category.
Both the win and nominations has come as a surprise to Sophie who commented, “These awards are a fantastic reward for the team effort required to make a beautiful book happen.
Food of the Southern Forests would not have happened without the support and wonderful work of the producers, the talent of photographer Craig Kinder and the wonderful team at UWA Publishing for which I’m very grateful!”
The 400 page cookbook documents 12 months of seasonal change within the picturesque Southern Forest region 3 hours south of Perth. The result is more than what you would usually expect from a cookbook, as Sophie went to great lengths working with acclaimed food photographer Craig Kinder, to capture the essence of the people behind the produce; focussing solely on the region that provides the daily backdrop and inspiration for her seasonal, produce driven recipes.
Since its October launch, the book has been widely received and strongly endorsed by both the local producers featured throughout the publication and by the surrounding community. It’s a stunning tribute the region and its people that welcomed Sophie and her family over 10 years ago.
The winner in each country will compete against winners in the same category in other countries to be awarded‘The Best in the World’. The results will be announced on Tuesday June 9, 2015 at the annual Awards event that will take place in Yantai, located south- east of Beijing, China. Further information about the awards is available from the Gourmand website www.cookbookfair.com
Food of the Southern Forests is published and available through UWA Publishing and selected book stores across Australia.
