The 30th March 2014 has been declared the day to get nude. The Fig Group is hosting a mass skinny dip at Swanbourne Beach in attempt to smash the current Guinness Book of World Records for the most amount of people skinny dipping at one time, whilst also raising funds for charity.
The Naked Fig’s Skinny Dip is all about promoting positive body image, and celebrating health, wellbeing and diversity. It’s time to “celebrate every body”. The event primarily aims to raise funds and awareness for the Butterfly Foundation, a national charity representing all people affected by eating disorders and negative body image.
Co-owner of the Fig Group, Lorna Marns, says this cheeky, large-scale skinny dip on Perth’s only nude beach is about much more than just getting your gear off for a good cause. “It is an inaugural event providing the opportunity to throw aside concerns of body image, and celebrate every body, no matter the size or shape.
“The current world record is held by New Zealand with 745 skinny dippers. It’s time for Perth to smash that!” said Ms Marns.
Paralympic swimmer, Jessica Smith, one of Australia’s most avid advocates for positive body image is the official ambassador for this event. Ms Smith says, “Women and men of all ages are subconsciously and consciously pressured to conform to societal beauty and body ideals. The constant barrage of negatives messages and images that we are fed via the media has fundamentally resulted in generations of people who believe they aren’t perfect and therefore should hate who they are and the way they look.
“I think the The Fig Group are creating a fantastic opportunity for the community to come together to promote much needed awareness about the seriousness of negative body image and eating disorders. This event is an opportunity for people to join with their community and simply have fun, relax and promote positive body image by simply embracing their own bodies. It will undoubtedly be an extremely liberating experience!” said Ms Smith.
The Naked Fig’s Skinny Dip will be a fully ticketed, managed and secure event. The Nedlands Swanbourne Surf Life Saving Club will provide support through assistance with water safety and first aid. Off site parking and a shuttle service will also be available.
