The Essential Guide for the World’s Greatest Restaurant Festival


The wait is almost over for the much anticipated foodie festival, Taste of Perth served up by Virgin Mobile, kicking off at Langley Park this Friday 2nd May to Sunday 4th May. Restaurants on the line up include: Nobu, Greenhouse, Silks, Print Hall, Lalla Rookh, Bistro Guillaume, el Público, Co-op Dining, Bib & Tucker and No4 Blake Street.

Here are the Top 10 Taste Essentials to get you ready for the action and help you make the most of Taste of Perth:

1.     Arrive early.
It’s a food festival like no other, so give yourself plenty of time to really make the most of it. There are lunch and dinner sessions and no matter what session you choose, plan to get there when the gates open so that you can make the most of the 4 hour session (5 hours on Sunday). That way you can be cruising through trying the finest cuisine from a selection of Perth’s top restaurants, shopping from artisan producers and enjoying the many interactive attractions and live music on show.

 2.     Plan your menu and come on an empty stomach.
Set your taste buds into overdrive and graze your way through Perth’s top restaurants! Where else can you try Print Hall’s smoked ocean trout followed by Nobu’s Pork Belly Spicy Miso Caramel? By using your menu card (see attached) when you arrive, you can select the dishes you want including the much anticipated icon dishes. These dishes will certainly prove popular and are limited in supply so be quick. For the adventurous foodies, be sure to try out el Público’s fried crickets and artisan mescal and Bib & Tucker’s ocean inspired Charcoal roasted Fremantle octopus. These dishes raise the bar in cuisine artistry and will certainly have you wanting more. So grab your ‘Crowns’ and get started!

3.     Learn the tricks of the trade.
If you want to reign supreme in the kitchen, then a session at one of the many interactive demonstrations is a must. Blanco Taste Kitchen presented by Foxtel’s Lifestyle Food Channel will see River Cottage Australia’s Paul West (as seen on Foxtel’s The Lifestyle Channel) and Perth’s top chefs whip up their creations with live pan-rattling demonstrations. Take a seat at the Brookfield Place Table Talks and join chefs, producers, cocktail gastronomists and sommeliers in a series of innovative culinary discussions and ‘how to’ sessions. These include; champagne, rum, sake and gin masterclasses, The Art of Oyster Shucking, wine matching and how to make the best punch for parties.  Gain some recipe inspiration at the Lurpak Cookery School with Julia Taylor from MasterChef. These sessions are hosted by the hot shots in all things food, so secure your spot to one of the mastery events, with up to four demonstrations running in each session, be sure to get in early to reserve your place (available on a first come basis).

4.     Listen to live music.
The Virgin Mobile BEATS & SEATS precinct will provide non-stop entertainment while you sit and relax in one of the double deck chairs or picnic blankets with a view of the city skyline and enjoying the finest culinary delights of the festival. The line up includes London based funk outfit Randa And The Soul Kingdom who are no strangers to the festival, having played at Taste of London previously. Virgin Mobile will also have mobile charge bars so you won’t miss capturing any of the Taste of Perth experience as you relax in foodie heaven.

5.     Shop from artisan producers.

 6.     CITROËN VIP Lounge.
Add some sparkle to your day with a Taste of Perth VIP Pass. This includes access to the exclusive CITROËN VIP Lounge, $30 worth of Crowns ($50 with a Platinum VIP ticket), two complimentary drinks and fast track festival entry.

 7.     Quench your thirst.
Once you’ve sampled the best food, wash it down with the finest refreshments. Make your way to the Beer Hall for your chance to taste local and imported beers and meet the brewers free master classes. Visit the custom built Beautifully Swedish Rekorderlig Star where the popular cider house will be showcasing some of their Swedish winter favourites. Fancy something a little stronger? Sensology presents The Art of Cocktail Making where expert mixologists will take you through a simple, step-by-step guide to making and serving some of the world’s most iconic cocktails. The Piper Champagne Bar by The Heritage will be serving the finest vintage and non-vintage sparkling champagnes from the prestigious house of Piper Heidsieck.

 8.     Chefs, chefs, chefs!
Enjoy the creations or see highly acclaimed chefs who have made their mark here and overseas in action: Shane Osborn, Guillaume Brahimi, Paul West, Matt Stone, Shane Watson, Joel Valvasori-Pereza, Leif Huru, Pat Cheong, Dominik Moldenhauer, Sam Ward, Hadleigh Troy, Alain Fabregues, David Whitting, Kiren Mainwaring, Scott Bridger and Tom Randolph.

9.     Under the sun or under the stars.
Taste of Perth is located at Langley Park, so make the most of the scenic outdoor setting on the Swan River with the city skyline as the backdrop. Soak in the sun during the lunch session or dine under the stars during the dinner session.

All part of the fun of the festival; Crowns are the official currency used at Taste to purchase dishes and drinks from the restaurants and goodies from exhibiting producers. The restaurants only accept Crowns as payment while a limited number of producers accept cash.

1 Crown = $1. Tasting size signature dishes from the restaurants are priced from 8-12 Crowns, with drinks from 6 Crowns. Crowns can be purchased onsite at the event from Crown Banks and Crown Sellers. To avoid queuing on the day, you can also buy Crowns in advance in cards of 30 and 50 Crowns or with Silver Crown, Gold Crown and VIP tickets.
