London Cafe & Bar

27 March, 2015
London Cafe

I married an Englishman and despite me being from the colony and him from the mother land, there is a huge cultural difference between us. For one, he doesn’t understand fairy bread. Andy used to live north of Joondalup and this is where I got a real cultural shock. I had no idea that these far northern suburbs were so popular with UK expats and I found things like “The English Shop” as confusing as “The Walkabout” pub in London. I have…

Mount Street Breakfast Bar

Mount Street Breakfast Bar

When someone with the surname “Hollywood” recommends a place to eat, I listen. He asked me if I wanted a “scoop” and told me about a place called  “Mount Street Breakfast Bar” that was under new management in the same spot that has really had nothing going for it since Bouchard closed it doors.  Hollywood had piqued my interest… of course I’d be keen to visit any place that has the word “breakfast” and “bar” in its name. Sitting on the…

Homestead Brewery

Breakfast in the Swan Valley… is there anywhere worth visiting besides Taylors Art & Coffee House?  Some of you might say “oh but there’s that place (I won’t mention it’s name again for fear of an angry mob with pitchforks knocking at my door baying for my blood)”. No – not that place with it’s $25 tinned bean breakfast. NOT EVER. Well now we have another choice for a top quality brekky in the valley. Drum roll please….. Let me…

Bluewaters Cafe

Blue Waters

It’s a lot of pressure picking a breakfast place for a catch up with friends when you do this job. You want to impress them with your choice; show them that you know what’s good in Perth for the morning meal. I picked Bluewaters Cafe for a morning out with hubby and friend Belinda after looking at their website and seeing pictures of tables with white table cloths and a plethora of awards and accolades. They were a finalist in 2013…

The Office on Harrogate

The Office2

“The Office on Harrogate” – is it just me or does the name sound like it belongs in London somewhere? I know when I first saw it on Instragram I had to ask “is this in Perth?”.. well it is, in West Leederville in fact. It is in that weird corner near Southport and Cambridge Street. I say weird because it’s more of a place you drive past to get to the Freeway rather than stop for any reason. With…

Grass Espresso Bar

Last time Andy was home I subjected him to the Ikea breakfast , so I felt I should take him somewhere that didn’t serve food from a bain marie; he deserved a bit of a treat. I had been told about Grass Espresso Bar by Pete Brennan (96fm & 6PR) and I was intrigued by his description – “walls covered in grass”. Well that part is true – you can’t miss this cafe with it’s green grassy walls and bright yellow furniture…

Rose & Crown

After a big 40th birthday party (Andy’s… NOT mine) we needed a big hang over curing breakfast. Not wanting to stray too far out of the neighbourhood we headed to the Rose and Crown in Guildford. This colonial style hotel/pub has been in existence since 1841  and has that “convicts built this” look about it. They even say that convicts haunt the halls of this heritage listed site! With a “Posh Convict Restaurant” section you can just imagine the comments from my English…

Miss Kitty’s Saloon

I was surprised to learn that a terrible Beaufort st “lifer” (Avenue Nine) was now gone and replaced by a trendy new “thang” – Miss Kitty’s Saloon. I’m not the first person to say this and I won’t be the last but walking into this venue is really like walking into a saloon with it’s swinging wooden doors, rocking chair and retro bits and bobs. The music playing is very cool – Pulp-Fiction cross Dirty Dancing-esque soundtracks – love it.…

Darlington Estate

Darlington Estate

Most of us love beach views or river views when we go out for breakfast, but what about a view of our picturesque hills? Darlington Estate has recently branched into the breakfast market and after a drive through the winding roads you arrive at a view that will take your breath away.  As Andy and I were seated Missy Higgins’ “Ten Days” played the chorus – “you’re still the only one that feels like home”, which made me feel reminiscent…

Who remembers the old Fairlanes bowling alley in East Perth? You know.. that old tired part of the city? Well it has undergone a massive facelift and there are a few new places that have popped up including a fantastic little gem – Chefz Table. With a beautiful view over Langley Park to the river, this immaculately designed restaurant brings breakfast and fine dining together. Marie, Andy, Carly, Hannah and I found ourselves greeted by a staff member with infectious…
