Steves Fine Wine & Food

12 June, 2014
Steves

The last time I was at Steves was on a Wednesday night about 15 years ago (holy crap). We were drinking cheap jugs of beer and loving the atmosphere of this well known student haunt. I think I may have fell down the stairs or pashed a law student…  something embarrassing like that anyway! Back then the pub was in Nedlands but it wasn’t “Nedlands”. Walking in and seeing the Moet champagne bar was a sure sign that things have…

La Farmacia

La Farmacia

I have been keeping an eye on La Farmacia for while through Instagram and after their opening in March I was keen to pay this new Doubleview café a visit. Driving out towards Scarborough, you can blink and almost miss this place sitting amongst a row of little local shops. Once inside though, it’s easy to forget you are metres away from busy Scarborough Beach Rd. The blue art deco theme is something different to the current trend of mod-industrial…

The Flying Taco

The Flying Taco

NOW CLOSED Before Mexican became fashionable in Perth there sat a little place on Angove St called The Flying Taco. It was the perfect place to grab something to eat after a session at The Rosie or if you wanted something takeaway that wasn’t fish and chips. A few weeks ago they decided to pick up a bat and join the breakfast game. This is a pretty brave move considering the competition they have on Angove Street. The places along…

The Buttery Cafe

The Buttery Cafe

Hallelujah! Finally there is somewhere north of Sorrento worth having breakfast at! The Buttery Cafe in Joondalup is a God send! This café  has filled a gap in the northern suburbs that was bigger than the disappointment the English cricket team are feeling. If any of you follow my ramblings on Twitter, you will know how I feel about the wasteland of decent places to eat in the northern suburbs. Having lived  in “south Geraldton” for a year, I found it frustrating trying to find…

Little Sisto

Another suburb… another suburban cafe. Well Little Sisto is certainly very suburban sitting as part of a grubby looking supermarket and few other shops but as soon you step inside you forget about all that as you take a seat amongst the vertical gardens of succulents or outthe back amongst the tumbling grape vine leaves with a sleeping cat in a wine barrel. It is as peaceful as sitting in your own backyard…. if your backyard has a sleeping cat…

Fortysevenkirwinstreet doesn’t need a webpage, it doesn’t need their facebook page to have a couple of thousand “likes”… it doesn’t need any of these things when it has the old “perth telegraph”.  I have lost count of the amount of people who have recommended this suburban café to me and just seeing the hoards of eager diners waiting outside on the shaded grass is enough to prove it’s popularity. So me being me, I get there super early before my friends and manage to get one of the last…

The ‘Pear’fect Pantry

Finally I am working my way through my list of “must visit” restaurants and cafes with The ‘Pear’fect Pantry being one such place I have been meaning to check out for a while now. Errin and I take each other out for breakfast for our birthdays, this breakfast was my gift! It’s really just a bit of an excuse for us to catch up and gossip. We found the cafe behind a laundry on the grounds of the Moondyne Gardens…

Foam Coffee Bar

I remember being a uni student in the late 90’s and regularly going to “Leedy” for those notorious student nights at the Hip-e club and when we weren’t being trash bags there we thought it was the height of sophistication to be drinking lattes out of glasses with little napkins wrapped around them at Oxford 130. It was a Leederville institution but all “good” things must come to end and in this case it was replaced by something even better…

Hardware Cafe

This is the newest cafe to open up in the northern beaches suburbs… you know those places we used to go on school holidays in the 80’s that are now part of the metro area? What was an old hardware store has now been transformed by local chefs, Beth and Pascal, into a cafe at the small Quinns Rocks shopping area. In keeping with the theme, Hardware Cafe has toolboxes for cutlery, jars full of keys for table numbers and…

Miss Kitty’s Saloon

I was surprised to learn that a terrible Beaufort st “lifer” (Avenue Nine) was now gone and replaced by a trendy new “thang” – Miss Kitty’s Saloon. I’m not the first person to say this and I won’t be the last but walking into this venue is really like walking into a saloon with it’s swinging wooden doors, rocking chair and retro bits and bobs. The music playing is very cool – Pulp-Fiction cross Dirty Dancing-esque soundtracks – love it.…
